Chapter Nine

The next morning, I called the apothecary to see the status of my order. I was going to need it. I didn’t know how I knew, but I just knew. A young woman, not Nayla, answered the hone and informed me that the order was ready.

As I drove over, I found that I was cheerful, even as I wasn’t looking forward to tell Farrah what I’d seen. No one wants to tell a kid, even one who is grown, that their mother was murdered, and from what I could see, was still scared to death. That suggested that whatever had killed her had something to do with magic. Otherwise, why would Mom still be scared? But I was pleased I’d been able to see her mother. I didn’t know if that had more to do with me, or with Anipe.

Anipe may have died many years ago, but she was scared—whatever it was presented a threat to her daughter in the present day.

A sense of something far bigger than me came over me then. Thankfully, I was here, at the apothecary. I parked the car and leaned my head forward, closing my eyes and taking deep breaths. Something big was afoot. I felt it, like a shadow or a cloud had just surrounded me, chasing away my positive mood as though it had never even shown its face.

What did it mean?

I sat for a couple of minutes and then made myself go in. My cheerful mood was gone, and a sense of dread, like low grade nausea, was all that remained. As I put my hand on the door and walked in, I felt a flash of heat around my ankles.

“Oh, crap,” I whispered. This was not the time for a hot flash, but I had no say in that.

I stepped inside, grateful for the cool air conditioning, and steadied myself against a display case near the door. The heat rose up into my knees, and my feeling of nausea increased. Was the nausea menopause, or the leftovers of whatever I’d felt in the car? I didn’t know, but this just plain sucked.

The heat rose into my belly, and then moved to my chest. I knew from experience that once it reached my neck, I was going to be sweating like I was running in the middle of summer. Why had I even bothered to shower today? Good night, Maggie. This was ridiculous.

Sweat broke out over my forehead. I fumbled in my purse, now large enough to accommodate holding the grimoire, for some tissue, and mopped at my face.

“Can I help you?” a cheerful voice rang out behind me.

For Pete’s sake. I turned around to find Nayla smiling at me.

She took one look at my face, sweating like mad, and probably as red as a lobster, and her eyes widened. “Oh my god. Are you all right?”

I managed to laugh. “No, not at the moment. I’m having the mother of all hot flashes. Could you get me a drink of water?”

She nodded and fled.
